About me

Hi, I'm Donald.

I've been doing taxes for 15 years, and today my office prepares about 500 returns a year. Most of my clients are families. About a quarter are small and medium-sized businesses. I work with people here in Boise and the Treasure Valley, and remotely with clients across Idaho, the U.S., and overseas.

  • I answer my phone year-round, not just in tax season.
  • I'll fight IRS letters for you.
  • Long in-person hours to sit down and work through your tax problems.
  • Real tax planning, so you're not guessing next year.

What's an Enrolled Agent? It's the highest credential the IRS awards. Enrolled Agents are licensed by the IRS and can represent you before the IRS on any tax matter, including audits, payment plans, and appeals.

My office is a small team of three, and one of us speaks Spanish.

FAQ

Questions I hear a lot

How does getting married affect my taxes?

If you're married on December 31, you're married for the whole tax year. Most couples save by filing jointly, but filing separately sometimes makes more sense, for example with income-based student loan payments. If you changed your name, update it with Social Security first so it matches your return. You should both update your W-4 so your withholding fits your combined income. I'll run the numbers both ways for you.

How does having kids affect my taxes?

A child can qualify you for the Child Tax Credit, and possibly the Earned Income Credit and the Child and Dependent Care Credit for daycare costs. If you're single, you may also qualify for Head of Household status, which lowers your tax. Your child needs a Social Security number. If you paid for daycare, bring the provider's name, address, tax ID, and how much you paid.

How does taking money out of my retirement affect my taxes?

Withdrawals from a traditional 401(k) or IRA are generally taxed as regular income. Before age 59½ there's usually an extra 10% penalty, though some exceptions apply. Qualified Roth withdrawals are usually tax-free. A lot of people get a surprise bill because too little tax was withheld, so call me before you take the money out and we'll plan for it.

How does selling my home affect my taxes?

If you owned and lived in the home for at least two of the last five years, you can usually exclude up to $250,000 of profit, or $500,000 if you're married filing jointly. Profit above that, or from a rental or second home, is taxable. Bring your closing statement and records of any improvements you made.

I got a letter from the IRS. What do I do?

Don't panic, and don't ignore it. Most IRS letters are about one specific item, not a full audit, but they do have deadlines. Before you call the IRS or send them anything, call me. The first audit-representation consultation is free, and as an Enrolled Agent I can deal with the IRS for you.

Do I have to come into the office?

No. Many of my clients never visit. We do a free 15-minute setup call by phone or Google Meet, you get me your documents, and we finish with a 10–15 minute call to go over your return. If you'd rather sit down in person, book an in-office appointment.

When and how do I pay?

When your return is finished. Nothing is due when you book. I take card, cash, and check, or you can have the fee taken out of your refund.
